Considered a true paradise that is almost untouched by mass tourism, the Cíes Islands still retain much of their magic and nature in their wildest state. However, this idyllic place has been changing after the distinction of the Playa de Rodas as the most beautiful beach in the world fact that has attracted to this place more and more tourists.

Located in the Atlantic Ocean off the Spanish city of Vigo, the Cíes Islands were declared a natural park in 1980 and are currently part of the Marine-Terrestrial National Park of the Atlantic Islands. They are composed of three main islands: Monteagudo or North Island, Ilha do Faro or Middle and Ilha de São Martinho or South.

Although not currently inhabited, archaeological excavations indicate that it was in 3500 a.c. and that they were also the house of monks of diverse religious orders during the Middle Age. Nowadays its only permanent inhabitants are birds of the most different types.

To get to the Cies Islands we left from Vigo since it was the only possible option during the month of October (there are departures of Bayonne and Cangas but only in the months of June, July, and August). But before we leave it is absolutely essential to make an application for authorization to visit in Xunta de Galicia’s website that can do here and only after obtaining your authorization is that you can get the boat tickets to visit the Islands. We have used the company Mar de Ons, whose website can be consulted here.

Fizemos a escolha acertada.

We booked our ticket for a 10:45 departure and thirty minutes before the scheduled time there we were waiting for Naviera Mar de Ons that was precisely on time. The process of boarding the ship was quick and effective. We made the right choice.

The way from the port of Vigo to the Cíes Islands took about 45 minutes, in which we always had a privileged view both on the islands and on this Spanish city.

We arrived at the main port of the island and quickly realized that we were in a unique place in which the green of nature dominates on par with the turquoise blue of the sea. Next to the port is located the largest restaurant on the island, where at that time the movement and the queues for the bathroom were already noticeable. We were in October and I can not imagine the confusion that happens there in the summer months.

We followed the crowd that had left the boat and we set out to discover the island. Soon we realized the warnings that are constant throughout the island. In the Cíes we can not change anything of place, stones, plants, animals, everything has to keep in its original place and we can not in any way change the singularity of this space. The Cíes Islands are to visit and not to to be destroyed by our presence.

The unpredictability of the weather in Galicia began to reveal itself, and light clouds began to form over us. These clouds quickly gave way to a small but annoying rain that gave us time to drink a coffee in another restaurant on the island, near the only place where we can sleep here, the Cies Islands Camping Park.

The rain stopped after a few minutes, and we quickly put our backpacks on, the baby into the stroller, and we began to walk the paths of the island. We were immediately delighted with how well these paths are maintained and signaled.

We went pass stunning beaches, worthy of an exotic tropical paradise. We were not expecting to find a place like this so close to us and we certainly were not disappointed.

After a few kilometers of exploring the paths of the island, we decided to go back and returned to the base where we ended up having lunch in the restaurant that we mentioned before. Cíes’ restaurant, or Cíes’ Canteen, is by far the worst that exists on the island and we had no choice but to have lunch there, unfortunately.

After lunch, we stretched our legs in the sun on the supposedly most beautiful beach in the world (we have to show The Guardian writers the Portuguese beaches so they can quickly change their ranking) and to absorb the nature in which we were involved.

The day was coming to an end and at 17:30 we were ready to return to the boat that would take us back to Vigo after a day filled with emotions and in communion with nature.
