One day was enough to fall in love with the amazing Budapest as we had mentioned here, but the best thing was that we still had a few more days to stroll and enjoy the Hungarian capital. On the second day, we had a few plans including a visit to Buda’s side and a Danube cruise but the day proved to be much more exciting than we were initially thinking.

We started the day very early next to our beloved Hungarian Parliament very close to our Airbnb and speaking on Airbnb if you register on the site through this link you receive a discount of 41 €. We quickly hustled to Széchenyi Chain Bridge, a suspension bridge linking the two sides of the Danube, Buda & Pest, which was inaugurated in 1849. The views of the bridge are absolutely breathtaking and we can glimpse a large part of the banks of the Danube, hundreds of boats passing underneath us and thousands of people crossing it on foot.

After crossing this famous bridge, we arrive in Buda, where we decided to spend much of our day and our first stop was right at the end of the bridge, the Budapest Funicular which connects to Buda Castle. Having been inaugurated in 1870 and after having been destroyed during World War II it reopened its doors to the public in 1986. A one-way ticket costs about € 3.70 (that’s what we bought) and a round trip costs about € 5.60. The views from the funicular are well worth it and since we were traveling with a baby it was a big help.

Coming out of the Funicular, we immediately fell in love with the Buda Castle, former residence of the Hungarian kings and which, since 1987, has been declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco. This imposing castle sits on a hilltop overlooking the whole city and is currently home to the Széchenyi Library, the Hungarian National Gallery and the Budapest History Museum.
We visited the Castle only from the outside and took advantage of its wonderful gardens and views over the city since the entrance in these places is free. In museums, there is an entrance fee.

Spring was blooming in Budapest and strolling in pink flowery streets left us wanting to spend even more time here.

Continuing our journey we arrive in Matthias Church, a Catholic church right in the heart of the Castle district. This late Gothic building was built in the second half of the 14th century and restored in the 19th century, with seven bells it was once the seventh largest church in the Hungarian Kingdom. In our opinion, it is without a doubt one of the most beautiful churches in Europe.

Right next to Matthias Church is one of our favorite places in Budapest and also one of the most beautiful, Fisherman’s Bastion. This neo-Gothic and neo-Romanesque monument rises on one of the Buda hills and overlooks the Pest side, built between 1895 and 1902.

After enjoying this magnificent part of the city we started our walk with the purpose of having lunch. We chose to have lunch at a vegan restaurant with very good reviews, the Édeni Vegan. Lunch exceeded our expectations and after resting a little we set off again.

Continuing our walk towards the Danube, we passed by the Church of Santa Ana, an excellent example of baroque style built from1740 to 1762 and that has survived wars, earthquakes, and floods.

And right there is the Danube, right in front of the Hungarian Parliament and from where we have a privileged view over this building, the ideal place for those who want to take some beautiful photos.

Our tour continued and as it was a long day we opted to return to the Pest side and stopped to rest and to let our baby sleep. And at one of the benches on the bank of the river, Joanna drew Buda and I wrote. It was very relaxing before we started our 2-kilometer path to the marina from which our sunset boat trip would take leave.

Andámos e andámos até que chegámos ao local de onde partia a nossa tour de barco reservada través do Get Your Guide, que recomendamos bastante. O barco chegou à hora marcada e rapidamente entrámos a bordo deste.

We walked and walked until we got to the place where our boat tour would depart from. We booked it through Get Your Guide, which we highly recommend. The boat arrived on time and we quickly got on board. The service was amazing and they were all very friendly as was the price of the tour. The trip lasted 90 minutes and during this time we navigated the waters of the Danube and took advantage of a privileged view over the great monuments of the city.

It was a busy day with activities and things to see. We were tired but before we went home we wanted to take advantage of Budapest at night and so we took a taxi to the center of the city, where we ate again a Kürtőskalács and then yes, it was time to return to the apartment.
