When we booked our 9-day trip through central Europe, which we shared with you here, many people warned us that the Slovak capital was the least interesting capitals cities to visit. But were they right? Is Bratislava an uninteresting city for its visitors? That’s what we’re going to talk about today.

We arrived in Bratislava around 1pm, checked in on our wonderful Airbnb and set out to discover the city.

Our first stop was a small vegan restaurant called “Balans” and we could not have made a better choice. We ate some of the best vegan burgers that we’ve tried in our lives (and believe me there were many).

Already with our tummies full, we ventured through the relatively calm streets of the city and we began precisely by the Staré Mesto that is the oldest part of the city and we quickly realized that this area is full of churches and that although it is the smallest area of the city is the one with the highest population density.

The Staré Mesto is the heart of Bratislava and also its cultural, political, social and tourist center. From this part of the city, we highlight Obchodná, the main street of the city, where there are many bars, pubs, fast food shops, and restaurants.

At one end of this shopping street we find the Trinity Church built in the place where it once stood the Church of St. Michael that was destroyed in 1529 during the Otoman wars. This church began to be built in 1717 and although it was inaugurated in 1727, the work inside continued during the first half of the eighteenth century.

Considered one of the oldest buildings in the city, the St. Michael’s Gate is the only gate of the old fortifications of the city that is preserved. It was built around the year 1300 and it features a predominantly baroque style. At its top we find a statue of Saint Michael and a Dragon. The Tower holds in it an exhibition of weapons from the city’s Museum.

Passing through the gate we will arrive in Michalska, a small street full of souvenir shops, bars and crafts for all tastes. It was one of the areas we liked the most in the city because of its uniqueness.

After walking through this historic area we went to vistit the postcard of the city, Bratislava Castle. This unusual Castle is located on one of the hills of the city well above the Danube. Due to its location, its size and its rectangular shape with 4 towers at each end, it has been the dominant building of the entire city over the years. On a clear day, we can see not only parts of Slovakia but also parts of Austria and Hungary.

This magnificent and imposing Castle already has very few traces of its original form, having been constantly renewed over the years, and in each era were added different details. After its almost total destruction in 1811 by the Napoleonic troops the castle had to be to be totally rebuilt, which would only happen in the second half of the 20th century.

Until the sunset, we still had the possibility to walk a little more through the center of the city and to absorb the spirit of this place. A quiet city that despite not having a charm and the attractions of other European capitals, has its value and deserves to be visited.
