Geneva has always been one of those places that never attracted me too much. I can not explain why, but in fact, it had never called my attention. Nowadays I realize that I was quick to judge or ignorant because I did not know that Geneva had much more to offer than I knew.

We decided to visit Geneva for a number of reasons, the first of which was due to the fact that we wanted to know a new country since no one of us visited Switzerland yet and curiosity started to take over if us. Secondly, we managed to arrange a cheap flight in TAP, which would take us to the City of Diplomacy. Thirdly and possibly the most important reason our daughter was only 4 months old and we thought it would be one of the safest and most suitable places to visit with a baby.

The flight from Lisbon to Geneva was quite fast and calm, B. slept the whole way there and we were confident that we would have a successful trip in front of us. The key is to not be afraid of taking chances.

When you arrive at Geneva airport, the cold does not fool you. We left behind the mild winter of Portugal and we have arrived in the merciless Swiss winter. While at the airport we took the free train ticket (yes, free!) that would take us from here to the Central Station of Geneva, near the place where we would be staying.

We stayed in an Airbnb located right in the center of town, more specifically at the foot of the huge Manor shopping center, which was the cheapest option considering the absurd price of hotels in the city. Even so, the Airbnb was not cheap and I should have realized soon what would be the cost of living in Geneva even before leaving Portugal.

We decided to set out to discover the city and our first goal was, of course, to find the famous Jet d’Eau, a large water fountain located on Lake Geneva, accessible through the Quai Gustave Ador and that can be seen from all over the city due to the height of the water that reaches 140m. After much walking and passing through beautiful places in the city there was no sign of this landmark fountain until we eventually reached the conclusion that the jet closes at 4 pm during the winter

But this setback did not stop us from continuing our adventure and we passed by the statue of the flying man from the exhibition LES VOYAGEURS of Cedric Le Borgne and we also visited the Jardin Anglais where the famous L’horloge Fleurie is located, a clock inaugurated in 1955 as symbol of the history of the city’s watchmakers that has more than 6500 flowers that are changed according to the seasons of the year.

We also enjoyed a beautiful walk along the banks of Lake Léman (or Geneva as it is also known) which is shared by Switzerland and France and is the largest lake in Western Europe.

Ovos a 4€? Pão a 3€? Uma sopa já feita a 9€? Tomates a 5€? Alface a 2€?

Back in the center of town, we decided to go to the supermarket to buy food to cook dinner at home and here we had our first big shock. A packet of rice at € 4? Eggs at € 4? Bread at € 3? A soup already made at € 9? Tomatoes at € 5? Lettuce for 2 €? Well, the Swiss live very well, that’s what I thought at the time. A Portuguese pocket survives in Geneva for a maximum of 5 days without financial collapse or starvation. There we chose to buy the cheapest pasta package we found and moved on with our lives.

Estava a nevar!

When we were leaving the MANOR we had the best and most beautiful experience that we could have had. It was snowing! And it was not just a little bit for the photos. It began to snow a lot and the joy was total, not only ours but of all the tourists and even of the local inhabitants.

This was the end of our first day in the beautiful city of Geneva. In the next post, we will tell you more about what we did on our second day in the city.
