In one of our walks along the famous O’Connell Street that we have talked about here, we decided to book a tour to Galway but that would pass through other interesting places such as the Connemara National Park, the Killary Fjord and the Kylemore Abbey. It’s about these three places that we are going to talk today.

At the scheduled time, we and dozens of people were waiting to enter the bus that would take us to know the Ireland that we are used to hearing about in films, in leprechaun’s stories and in stories of pots of gold at the end of the rainbow.

On the way, we had a chance to see much of what the guide was telling us and see the famous black-headed sheep, horses, mountains damaged by agriculture, palaces, typical Irish villages and much more.

Before arriving in Galway we made three stops, the first one was in the Killary Fjord where we had the chance of boarding a ferry that during 45 minutes took us to know this fjord that has a length of 16 kilometers and it is 45 meters deep. It runs from the Atlantic Ocean to the town of Leenane. This is the only fjord in Ireland and surprises by the mountains that surround it and for the fauna and flora that gives life to it.

There are vestiges of ancient civilizations proven by tombs of over 4000 years old. Much of these spaces were once part of Kylemore Abbey, which by the way was our next stop.

Built on the ruins of Kylemore Castle, Kylemore Abbey, it has since 1920 been a convent of Benedictine nuns who fled Belgium during World War I. However its origin dates back to 1868 when Mitchell Henry, a wealthy London physician moved to the county of Galway and became a politician. This abbey is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful buildings we have seen during our journey through Ireland that seduced us with its architecture, its Victorian gardens and the nature that surrounds it.

If we were not on our way to Galway we would certainly enjoy spending more time in each of these places situated right in the heart of Ireland.
