The Greek capital was and continues to be part of our lives either in our history lessons where we studied this civilization or nowadays as citizens of democratic countries. This is because Athens is the birthplace of democracy since it was here that were laid the foundations of this political regime.

We arrived in Athens really early, maybe around 6:30 in the morning and since our check in was only at 2pm we contacted our airbnb host that gently allowed us to leave our bags in the apartment earlier.

We should mention that this was the 2nd trip with our daughter. The first one was to Geneva and she was very little so it was easy to manage everything but in this trip to Greece she was already 1 year old so we had to do things a little differently.

We started our visit in Syntagma Square, near the place where we were staying. Syntagma is the heart of Athens and it is where the famous greek parliment is located and where massive protests were held in recent times during the Greek Economic Crisis that lasts until this day.
The Parliment building is very peculiar but without any architectonic appeal to me, maybe because of its deteriorated and modest facade, but it’s worth visiting to see the Evzones, the presidential guards, that are guarding the builing using their traditional costumes.

In the middle of august Athens is a really hot city so we set out to discover the city through the streets that sheltered us from the scorching sun.

The next stop was the Metropolitan Cathedral of Athens, an Orthodox church that was under construction during 20 years, from 1842 to 1862 and the materials use to build it were recycled from the demolition of 72 other churches.

Continuing our visit in the torrid Athens, we passed by the lovely and charming Agios Eleftherios Church until we reached the Monastiraki Square, whose name is due to the presence of a Monastery here many years ago. Monastiraki is one of the main shopping areas in the city. Its flea market is full of boutiques, souvernir shops and most importantly specialized shops where is still possible to bargain prices and buy amazing souvenirs and traditional greek products. This area fills daily with thousand of tourists and locals and captivated us for its environment and its constant liveliness.

With the temperature slowing decreasing, we walked to what people say is the real heart of Athens, the famous Plaka neighbourhood that is probably the most famous one of all of Greece. Plaka is the oldest part of the city and it was here that the city began many hundreds of years ago. This neighbourhood is also called the God’s Neighbourhood due to its proximity to the Acropolis. It’s a lively area, much visited by tourists that don’t get tired of photographing its streets and stairways.

While visiting Plaka we visited the Roman Agora, also known as the Roman Forum, where formerly the inhabitants got together and where the market and public toilets where located. Nowadays is just ruins, of course, but that should be visited by everyone. Its entrance fee is included in the Acropolis’ ticket.

With the day coming to an end and with a baby an two parents exhausted was time to go back to our apartment , but before that we had the chance to try one of the best vegetarian restaurants in the city, Avocado, and it’s worth it!
